New Delhi – In an unprecedented move, India's Union Budget for 2026 will be presented on Sunday, February 1. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla confirmed the date on Monday, marking a historic first for the nation's fiscal roadmap.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present the budget, her eighth such address to Parliament. The announcement follows last week's confirmation by Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju regarding the schedule for the upcoming Budget Session. This session is slated to run in two phases from January 28 to April 2, 2026.
Rijiju shared the details via social media, stating, "On the recommendation of the Govt of India, Hon’ble President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu ji has approved the summoning of both the Houses of Parliament for the Budget Session 2026." He further elaborated that the first phase will conclude on February 13, with the second phase commencing on March 9.
Procedural Shift
The Budget Session, traditionally the first parliamentary gathering of the calendar year, commences with the President's address. The presentation of the Union Budget on a Sunday is a departure from convention, aimed at potentially optimizing parliamentary time or accommodating specific legislative schedules.
