India's AI Startups to Showcase Foundational Models at February Summit
Overview
Bengaluru-based Sarvam and Gnani.ai are expected to unveil advanced AI foundational models at the India AI Impact Summit in February. These models, developed under the government's IndiaAI Mission, focus on Indian languages, reasoning, and voice tasks, signaling significant progress in domestic AI capabilities. Secretary S Krishnan confirmed government optimism for multiple showcases.
Indigenous AI Models Poised for Debut
Bengaluru-based artificial intelligence startup Sarvam is anticipated to present its foundational model ahead of the India AI Impact Summit, scheduled for February 15-20. MeitY secretary S Krishnan expressed optimism that Sarvam, along with one or two other applicants, will be ready to showcase their advancements. The government is keen on fostering the development of indigenous AI capabilities.
IndiaAI Mission Progress
Sarvam, founded in July 2023, was among the first startups approved by the government under the IndiaAI Mission. Its model is designed for enhanced reasoning, support for voice-based tasks, and fluency across various Indian languages. This initiative aims to create AI solutions tailored for the Indian context.
Multilingual and Emotional Intelligence
Another startup, Gnani.ai, is also likely to have its foundational model ready. CEO Ganesh Gopalan indicated the startup is developing a voice-first, multilingual AI system with 'emotionally intelligent' capabilities. This focus on nuanced human-computer interaction marks a significant step in AI development.
Development Timelines
Addressing concerns about development delays, Krishnan stated that the creation of large-scale AI models involves an iterative process. Models will be made public once they achieve full readiness, ensuring robustness and reliability. A total of 12 startups and consortia have been selected across two phases to build indigenous foundational AI models.
