MeitY Refutes Source Code Demand for Smartphones
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has formally denied claims that it intends to compel smartphone manufacturers to share source code and implement significant software changes. The ministry characterized recent media reports as sensationalist, stating they selectively ignored industry association comments and misrepresented ongoing consultations.
These reports had suggested that companies like Apple and Samsung were alerted to new security measures potentially exposing intellectual property and user privacy. Industry groups had previously voiced concerns over provisions that could grant the government access for security testing and mandate long-term system log preservation.
Clarification on Consultation Process
MeitY clarified that it routinely engages in consultations covering various technical aspects. These discussions include safety compliance, electromagnetic interference and compatibility (EMI/EMC) parameters, Indian language support, interface requirements, and evolving security standards. The ministry reiterated its commitment to collaborating constructively with industry stakeholders.
