India Poised for Mobile Manufacturing Milestone

India's mobile phone production is set to reach a significant USD 75 billion by the end of fiscal year 2026, with exports projected to surpass USD 30 billion. This ambitious target highlights the country's rapidly expanding electronics manufacturing sector.

PLI Scheme Fuels Production Growth

The Mobile Phone Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme has been a cornerstone of this expansion. India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA) Chairman Pankaj Mohindroo stated that the scheme, nearing its completion in March 2026, has substantially scaled India's mobile production capabilities.

Expanding Electronics Ecosystem

Beyond mobile phones, India's overall electronics production reached USD 133 billion in 2025. The industry anticipates further growth bolstered by the Electronics Component Manufacturing Scheme (ECMS) and recent semiconductor project approvals, creating a more comprehensive manufacturing ecosystem.

Global Players Increase Footprint

Industry analysts note that companies like Apple have significantly expanded their manufacturing presence in India, partly due to global supply chain realignments and trade policies. This has led to record export figures from the country.

Premium Segment Drives Exports

Neil Shah, VP of Research at Counterpoint, observed that India will produce close to 300 million mobile units annually, with exports making up one in four smartphones manufactured in 2025. The premium segment, particularly the U.S. market, is a major export destination, with brands like Apple, Samsung, and Motorola boosting export values. Data from International Data Corporation shows Apple's iPhone supplies for the domestic market hitting record highs in Q3 2025, leading the premium and super-premium segments.

Future Competitiveness Outlook

Mohindroo indicated that the next phase of growth will depend on India's ability to further scale manufacturing operations, specialize in product segments, and integrate more deeply into global value chains for both finished goods and components.
