FCC Approves Major Starlink Expansion
The Federal Communications Commission on Friday authorized SpaceX to deploy an additional 7,500 Starlink satellites. This significant expansion will bring the total number of satellites in SpaceX's constellation to 15,000, aiming to bolster global internet access.
Enhanced Connectivity and Services
The FCC's decision not only permits the launch of more satellites but also allows them to operate across five distinct frequencies. This facilitates enhanced high-speed internet coverage and introduces direct-to-cell connectivity capabilities outside the United States, with supplementary coverage within the U.S.
Regulatory Framework and Deadlines
SpaceX had initially sought approval for 15,000 additional satellites. However, the FCC opted to defer authorization for the remaining 14,988 proposed Gen2 Starlink satellites. SpaceX must now ensure that 50% of the newly approved satellites are launched by December 1, 2028, with the remaining half due by December 2031.
