India LPG Use Soars: Ujjwala Refills Drive Record Consumption
Overview
India's clean cooking initiative is showing significant success, with Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) consumption climbing as the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) enables over 10 crore households to regularly refill cylinders. Substantial refill statistics, averaging 13.6 lakh daily for Ujjwala families in FY25 and over 55 lakh nationwide, highlight a crucial behavioral shift. This trend indicates the program is successfully delivering sustainable, healthy cooking infrastructure to millions of Indian families.
Ujjwala Yojana Usage Surges
India's nationwide LPG system is demonstrating robust growth, with consumption significantly boosted by regular usage from beneficiaries of the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY). Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri highlighted on Wednesday that the program's true success lies not just in providing connections, but in ensuring consistent use. The scheme has now provided LPG access to 10.41 crore households, rapidly approaching its overall target of 10.60 crore connections.
Record Refill Numbers
Data reveals a substantial shift in consumer behavior, evidenced by impressive refill statistics. Approximately 276 crore LPG refills have been delivered to PMUY households to date. In the current fiscal year 2024-25, an average of 13.6 lakh refills are being delivered daily specifically to Ujjwala families. Across the entire nation, more than 55 lakh LPG cylinders are now delivered every single day, showcasing immense demand.
Government's Clean Cooking Push
This increased consumption signifies a move away from traditional cooking methods towards a healthier, cleaner ecosystem for millions. Average LPG consumption per Ujjwala family has risen markedly from three cylinders to 4.85 cylinders annually. Minister Puri stated this trend proves the initiative is providing "everyday infrastructure delivering dignity at scale" under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership. Launched in May 2016, PMUY provides deposit-free LPG connections, including the first refill and stove, to women from low-income households.
